Flavors of Spanish: Spanish Voice-Overs

with 23 Comments

Pure Spanish is a Myth! What you should now before you start localizing into Spanish.

Localization into Spanish using Spanish voice-overs

There are big differences between the Spanish spoken in Spain and the Spanish in Latin and South America. But not all people know about the fact that even Spanish in Spain is spoken differently, and in various parts of Latin America people speak not the same Spanish, and sometimes quietly understand each other.

If you’re going to find a good Spanish voice-over, you should know which market you are going to target, and use the voice-over artist in Spanish from that region. But let’s be honest: Pure Spanish is a Myth.

Usually Latin American voice-over artists speak the “proper” Spanish, you can find a LATAM voice-over with clear pronounciation which is easy to understand. In fact, most of voice-overs for commercials, or elecronic books are hired in Latin America, because they’re perfectly understood by Spaniards.

Castilian voice-overs

Let’s understand the most notable differences beetween different Spanish variants.

Castilian Spanish voice-over artist pronounce ‘ce’ and ‘ci’ as ‘th’. For example, in Madrid people would say ‘thiento’ (original ‘ciento), and in Latin America people would pronounce the verb as ‘siento’.

There were two different sounds that eventually evolved into “a lisp”, the z, as in realizar, and the ç (the cedilla), as in plaça: the z makes a /dz/ sound and the cedilla makes a /ts/sound.

Spanish in Spain has also it’s own subdivisions: Galician and Catalan; these languages are also labeled as “Spanish”.

Catalan voice-overs sound like a mixture of Spanish and French. Galician voice-overs sound more like Portuguese.

LATAM voice-overs

Spanish in Latin America has it’s own pronounciation with its slang and even grammar rules. In different parts of Central America ‘s’ is often omitted, and other syllables can also be missed in everyday’s language.

Voice-over in Spanish – which one to choose?

Spanish voice-overs could sound different and have different accents, but the one thing is common – it’s the most beautiful, classic and authentic language in the world. So, target your market, and choose that accent that is popular in the region.

Have a good luck!

Douglas Simlick
